VE Day Celebrations!
Our assembly hall was a mass of red, white and blue this morning as our children came in appropriate dress for the celebration and commemoration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The children were treated to a special assembly where they listened to the account of local resident, Olga Hopkins, who is now the grand age of 99 and served with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during the war and vividly remembers the fantastic news of the German surrender coming through on the American Forces Network Radio Station at around midnight. "We all jumped out of bed and put our battledress on over our pyjamas. We went to the seargeant's mess where there was a part going on, so we joined in." Olga spoke passionately about the feeling of great hope and the importance of freedom. Our children were glued to the screen as they listened to her amazing account, which helped to make our VE Day celebrations really special at Skyswood! A big thank you to Olga, who was one of the fifty veterans invited up to Buckingham Palace on Monday. We understand that she enjoyed a fantastic day!
